The p-< conjugated polyamic acid (PAA) was synthesized by the condensation polymerization of benzoguanamine and pyromellitic dianhydride under microwave irradiation. It was then grafted with a series of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate derivatives with different alkyl chain lengths. The solubility and film-forming capability of the graft PAAs were improved and their emission spectra (PL) were investigated. At the same time, quantum calculation of their molecular oscillator strengths was performed using a single-excitation configuration interaction method. Through these two methods, the effects of the introduction of the graft side chain and the alkyl chain length on the fluorescent behavior were investigated. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of graft polymers were all enhanced according to the length of the alkyl chain. The relationship between fluorescence and molecular structure were compared with the theoretical results.

Key Words: Polyamic acid • graft polymer • side chain • fluorescence
